48 Bed acute care hospital

Chan Soon-Shiong Medical Center at Windber (Windber) is an independent, non-profit acute care hospital in northern Somerset County, PA. Windber Hospital is one of the largest employers in the county and has been providing care to residents for over a century. Windber leadership strives to provide quality patient care in a comfortable, home-like environment.

Recently, waning resources were threatening the hospital's mission, Windber engaged with both MedCom Solutions and Corazon to meet the challenge of sustaining a high level of service of care and employment to its community.

MedCom Solutions offered a unique combination of experience, expertise, and technology in charge capture and chargemaster management services. Corazon provided specialized services in consulting, recruitment, interim management, and accreditation for the heart, vascular, neuroscience, and orthopedic specialty programs.

MedCom and Corazon partnered to assist Windber by identifying the right opportunities for improvement, in the right order, by layering early achievable results with long-term objectives to expedite revenue enhancement and optimize efficiencies. This plan allowed Windber to achieve its goal of remaining a sustainable resource for its community.

Challenges
  • Losses of $3M/year led to a multi-faceted, multi-year effort to increase revenue.
  • A feasibility study initiated an interventional cardiology program due to positive Return on Investment.
  • Pricing and charge re-structuring efforts identified the opportunity to enhance reimbursement.
  • Comprehensive charge and coding review performed to ensure the successful launch of new Cardiac Catheterization Lab services.
  • Clinical area workflow review completed, improving productivity.
  • Ongoing accreditation of the PCI program assures state and societal guidelines and best practices of care.
